The European Union welcomes the delivery of first lot of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines to the Republic of Moldova

The European Union welcomes the delivery of 21,600 doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine as part of a larger donation of 200,000 doses from Romania to the Republic of Moldova, which arrived at the Chisinau Airport today. The delivery was possible with the support of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

“The European Union and its Member States continue their support to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova in the fight against the pandemic. Today the first lot of COVID-19 vaccines arrived in Chisinau, as part of the support provided by Romania. I want to expresses gratitude to Romania for this generous donation of vaccines delivered through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. This first lot will be utilised for the medical workers fighting in the front lines. An equitable and fair access to vaccines is a key element in ending the pandemic.  The European Union and its Member States, acting together as 'Team Europe' are proud to also support the COVAX platform in delivering vaccines to our partners”, said Peter Michalko, Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova.

The European Union and its Member States are supporting the launch of the vaccination campaign with concrete steps. The vaccine delivered today with the support of Romania and via the EU Civil protection mechanism are a much needed help for the medical workers from the country. The transport was conducted in the framework of the European Civil Protection Mechanism, highlighting the Team Europe approach.

The European Union has mobilised a EUR 128 million package to assist the Republic of Moldova in the fight against the COVID-19 crisis, delivering medical material and equipment, providing support to strengthen the health system and economic recovery as well as supporting vulnerable groups. The EU doubled its contribution to COVAX to EUR 1 billion to ensure safe and effective vaccines for low and middle-income countries.
