EU Delegation awards European Civil Society Awards, on International Human Rights Day

Chisinau, 10 December 2020

Within the information campaign EU-Moldova: Together for a stronger society” was organized the event “European Awards for Civil society - Human rights”/ “European Awards for Civil Society - Human Rights”. The initiative took place on the occasion of the International Day of Human Rights. Similar events will be held throughout the information campaign.

The event was attended by the Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova, Peter Michalko, as well as, in virtual format, Ambassadors of EU States.

The “EU-Moldova: Together for a Stronger Society” information campaign is dedicated to civil society and human rights. Its purpose is to help raise awareness of the importance of civil society organizations and respect for human rights, and to highlight the support provided by the European Union for civil society organizations in the context of promoting human rights in our country, local development and combating the consequences of the COVID-19 crisis.

The “European Civil Society Awards - Human Rights” were awarded to grassroots non-governmental organizations for their efforts in this vital area for any society: Media Freedom Award (Nord News portal, Bălți), Protection of Minority Rights Award (“Noi-Viitorul Luminos” Association, Fălești), Human Security Award (“Human Rights Embassy” Association) and a special award, Advocacy for Promoting Change (“Promo-LEX” Association).

“The European Union awards these prizes on the occasion of the Human Rights Day, in gratitude to all civil society organizations in the Republic of Moldova which focus their work on defending and promoting human rights and democracy. We would like to celebrate the results obtained in their daily work, especially during this challenging pandemic period. I would like to recall the key importance of associating civil society in discussions and decision-making processes, which are vital to be included in the field of human rights and fundamental freedoms. We want to encourage civil society organizations to persevere and remain generators of change for the betterment of the country and the lives of its citizens. The European Union will remain close to you, also via the assistance provided to this sector, because we are together for a stronger society”, said Peter Michalko, Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova. The message of encouragement was shared by the Ambassadors of the EU Member States, who connected online to the event.

In the Republic of Moldova, the European Union currently supports 28 large projects implemented by civil society organizations, with a total amount of financial resources of about 22 million euros. Thanks to these projects, over 1000 vulnerable people benefit from 42 social services open for them in various localities. Another more than 800 vulnerable people enjoy free services and products generated by the more than 15 social enterprises (including six created on the left bank of the Nistru river), which have created 59 jobs for disadvantaged people. At the same time, more than 70 small businesses started by young people were financed, which contributed to the creation of 84 jobs. There are initiatives that have allowed these people to improve their quality of life and better inclusion in the communities they belong to.

The awarding ceremony was broadcasted on the platform www.privesc.eu (the full version could be found here), on the Facebook page of the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Moldova) and on the page „Împreună mai puternici”.
