Morocco - meeting between High Representative/Vice-President Borrell and Minister for Foreign Affairs Bourita

11.09.2020

Josep Borrell, the High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union and Vice-President of the European Commission, and Nasser Bourita, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, had a telephone conversation today, 11 September. They touched on topics of common interest related to regional stability in the Maghreb region, in particular the most recent developments in the Libyan crisis, as well as certain aspects of the Partnership for shared prosperity between the European Union and Morocco.

In this context, broad consensus was reached between the two parties on the opportunities created by the inter-Libyan dialogue recently hosted by Morocco in Bouznika. The High Representative welcomed and encouraged the Moroccan initiative as a timely contribution to UN-led efforts to achieve a political solution to the crisis in Libya which was capable of ensuring the country’s cohesion, territorial integrity and sovereignty. Stability and peace in Libya are of vital importance for the stability and prosperity of the Maghreb as a whole, and are a European priority.

The High Representative and the Minister for Foreign Affairs agreed to continue their dialogue and their respective efforts in that direction, in the spirit of close consultation, in order to strengthen the political momentum that is developing among the Libyan parties.
