EU partners with local NGO to expand support to ex-offenders

The Prisoner Pre-release and Resettlement Programme is expected to result in a reduction of recidivism rates among ex-offenders who participate in the programme, complements other Human Rights projects supported by the EU over the last 3 years.

The European Union Delegation to Trinidad and Tobago has provided grant funding to local non- governmental organisation, Vision on Mission, to expand its Prisoner Pre-release and Resettlement Programme. 

Vision on Mission (VoM) was selected based on its existing work with ex-offenders and returned citizens in partnership with the Prison Service/Ministry of National Security.

The two year project is expected to expand the organisation's existing programme. The activities will include:

  • Increasing the capacity of VoM staff to enhance the organisation's provision of rehabilitation services to its clients;
  • Providing training to ex -offenders in food and agro processing;
  • Establishment of an Outreach Centre in San Fernando , thus allowing for increase client access to services provided by VoM;
  • Facilitate employment opportunities of ex-offenders, through establishment of small business and job market readiness.

This project, which is expected to result in a reduction of recidivism rates among ex-offenders who participate in the programme, complements other Human Rights projects supported by the EU over the last 3 years. These projects are in the following areas: research on death penalty; support to single fathers struggling to maintain care and contact with their children due to perceived inequalities in the court system; and the promotion of human rights and gender equality, with special attention to mitigating violence, legal discrimination, bullying and homelessness related to sexual orientation.
