Expertos from CIDOB Barcelona, Colectivo de Análisis de la Seguridad con Democracia (CASEDE), El Colegio de México and the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) discussed how to fight transnational organised crime.

On 22 September 2020, the Delegation of the European Union to Mexico organised the first online dialogue of the Phase II EU-Mexico Think Tanks Dialogue Initiative “Strategies to fight transnational organised crime.” Anna Ayuso, Barcelona Centre for International Affairs (CIDOB), Raúl Benítez Manaut, Colectivo de Análisis de la Seguridad con Democracia (CASEDE), Mónica Serrano, El Colegio de México (Colmex) and Marco Stefan, Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), participated in this webinar, which was moderated by Flor Castillo Román.

The experts exchanged perspectives on the strategies and challenges that the European Union and Mexico face in the fight against transnational organised crime. They highlighted the importance of exchanging information and personal data to combat organised criminal groups in an increasingly globalised international context. Furthermore, the experts explained the challenges involved in conducting this exchange of information and personal data between the Member States of the European Union, as well as with third countries.

They also discussed the policies and paradigm changes that are needed to consolidate institutions that comprehensively fight against transnational organised crime.

The experts agreed on the importance of promoting cooperation between Mexico and the European Union in the fight against transnational organised crime at all levels of government, as well as at the regional level. They pointed out that fostering cooperation on capacity strengthening among the justice and security institutions, as well as soft power tools such as political dialogues can promote a better understanding between the European Union and Latin America.
