The 9th EU-Mexico High Level Dialogue on Human Rights underlined once more our strong commitment to work closer together promote respect for human rights in Mexico and the EU.

On the 10th of July 2020 the European Union and Mexico held the 9th session of the High-Level Dialogue on Human Rights by videoconference. The meeting was co-chaired by the European Union Special Representative for Human Rights, Mr. Eamon Gilmore, and the Mexican Vice-Minister for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Martha Delgado Peralta. A day before (9th of July) an EU-Mexico Civil Society Organisations Seminar was organised, also by videoconference. Representatives of the Mexican and European organisations that took part in the seminar presented recommendations to Mexico and the EU in the opening segment of the High-Level Dialogue on ways to strengthen their cooperation in the promotion of human rights.

The EU and Mexico took stock of existing progress and the challenges they face in the promotion and protection of human rights. They showed willingness to strengthen their cooperation, particularly in the framework of the global crisis triggered by COVID-19 and its impact on vulnerable populations. They also discussed gender equality and ways to step up the fight against gender-based violence and domestic violence, highlighting the importance of the global EU-UN Spotlight Initiative whose implementation in Mexico addresses these issues. They discussed discrimination and rights of indigenous and Afro-descendent peoples, refugees, and migrant populations; xenophobic, hate speech and far-right extremism; free worship and the rights of religious minorities. Issues related to torture, enforced disappearances, impunity, the Rule of Law, human rights defenders and the protection of journalists, and freedom of expression were also discussed. The meeting concluded with a discussion business and human rights, with a focus on the implementation of the UN Guiding Principles and the negotiations of a Legally Binding Instrument on the matter.
