On June 9th, 2020, the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Mexico organised the ninth online think tanks dialogue, “Coronavirus: Phase-Out Roadmaps and 'New Normality'”. The following experts participated: Guillermo M. Cejudo Ramírez, (Centre for Research and Teaching on Economics, CIDE), Eduardo González Pier, (Mexican Council on Foreign Relations, COMEXI), Saila Heinikoski, (Finnish Institute of International Affairs, FIIA) and Karel Lannoo, (Centre for European Policy Studies, CEPS). The webinar was moderated by Érika Ruiz Sandoval.
The experts explained the responses and challenges to face the COVID-19 crisis in the European Union and Mexico. Panellists considered the implications of the policies to address the pandemic from the municipal to the multilateral level. Aspects such as the financial responses and border control measures in the European Union, as well as public trust in the health system and the decision making at the local level in Mexico were addressed.
Experts agreed on the importance to promote cooperation amidst the current crisis. Sharing information and rapidly coordinating policies will keep being central elements for comprehensive policy responses. Some areas where Mexico and the EU could collaborate are governance processes in democratic elections and practices, internal and inter-governmental coordination mechanisms, as well as the reinforcement of social protection systems.
