A Mexico-European Union (EU) informal conference call was held on May 15, 2020, to address human rights’ protection in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. During the call it was agreed to hold the IX High Level Dialogue on Human Rights by the end of June or first half of July 2020 as well as to participate in the VII civil society seminar.

In the framework of the strong cooperation between Mexico and the UE to promote and protect human rights, Vice-Minister for Human Rights and Multilateral Affairs of Mexico, Martha Delgado, and EU Special Representative for Human Rights, Eamon Gilmore held a constructive exchange on priority issues of particular relevance as we face the global challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

These issues included the human rights’ protection in the context of the response to the pandemic, with emphasis on the protection of vulnerable groups, gender equality and the fight against gender-based violence, as well as the protection of journalists and human rights’ defenders.

They reiterated the shared commitment to the valuable collaboration of the European Union with the Mexican National Search Commission on forced disappearances, as well with the Spotlight initiative, in combating violence against women.

Vice-Minister Delgado and Special Representative Gilmore also highlighted the commitment to work together to effectively strengthen multilateralism and international cooperation on human rights issues during and after the health emergency posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The conference call was also attended, among other officials, by Edita Hrda, Managing Director for the Americas at the European External Action Service (EEAS); Cristopher Ballinas Valdés, Director General for Human Rights and Democracy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico; Mara Marinaki, Principal Advisor on Gender at the European External Action Service, and Mauricio Escanero, Ambassador of Mexico to the European Union.

The High Level Dialogue and its civil society component are a key part of the strategic partnership between Mexico and the European Union, based on shared values.
