Foreign Affairs Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini, met today in Mexico City. They underlined the importance of the principles and values that Mexico and the European Union share, as well as their determination to continue joining efforts to promote a cooperative and positive agenda both bilaterally as well as in multilateral fora.

Foreign Affairs Minister Ebrard and the High Representative Mogherini underlined that the modernization of the Global Agreement between Mexico and the European Union will lead to a deeper and more extensive relationship with tangible benefits for both societies. The modernization process also represents a clear signal in favor of multilateralism and an open and rules-based international order.

In this context, they expressed their satisfaction at the conclusion this week of all negotiations related to the political dialogue and cooperation pillar. Following the agreement in principle on the trade and investment pillar, both sides are now working to finalise the remaining pending issues, which will pave the way to the signing of the Agreement and its subsequent ratification.

The High Representative reaffirmed the European Union's support for the Comprehensive Development Plan between El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico as presented by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), for which the European Union has already mobilised 7 million euros. Additional resources and synergies with its other cooperation projects in the region may be further explored, in close cooperation with all concerned countries. The Foreign Affairs Minister and the High Representative exchanged views on regional and global issues, coinciding on the need to promote peaceful resolution of disputes and the implementation of Agenda 2030.

Finally, they declared their decision to enhance Mexico-European Union cooperation on multilateral affairs. Among other topics, this cooperation should cover the protection and promotion of human rights, the fight against all forms of xenophobia, racial discrimination and intolerance, gender equality, the rights of indigenous peoples, migration, the fight against corruption, the reform of the World Trade Organization, G20 related matters and the decided actions that are necessary to face the challenge of climate change.

With this visit, Mexico and the European Union reaffirm their commitment to the continued strengthening of their friendship and strategic partnership.
