Dr Bissessur, General Manager of the Beach Authority

Dear colleagues

Ladies and gentlemen

Thank you for joining me this morning at Mont Choisy public beach for our cleaning action.

This action is being organised ahead of the 4thOur Ocean Conference that the European Union will be organising on 5-6 October in Malta.

This is an important gathering where global leaders (including the Minister of Ocean Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping from the Republic of Mauritius) are invited to commit to new actions to protect and use oceans in a sustainable manner.

Oceans cover two-thirds of the surface of the Earth. They are critical for our planet, and for the life of billions of people.

Yet, oceans are faced with numerous challenges that seriously affect marine life, and hence our lives.

Seas and oceans are certainly key for Small Island Developing States like Mauritius that depend on marine resources for economic activities such as fisheries and tourism as well as for food security. But they are also important for the European Union.

Europe is a maritime continent and its various oceans and seas, as well as its extensive coastline, provide for important maritime activities that are essential from an economic, environmental and social point of view.

The 'blue' economy represents roughly 5.4 million jobs and generates a gross added value of almost €500 billion a year.

In this context, it is important for our partners to know that the European Union is doing and will keep doing its part for the conservation and a more sustainable use of oceans at regional level and at international level. Our action today is an example of our solid commitment.
