Strengthening Migration Governance in Mauritania and Implementation of the SNGM Action Plan

Implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) over a period of 36 months (2023–2026), with financial support from the EU amounting to €4,500,000.

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to better migration governance[1] in Mauritania based on qualitative and quantitative data, by supporting the Mauritanian government in implementing the National Migration Management Strategy (SNGM) and its Action Plan.

 

Specific objectives are to:

  • Support the Ministry of Interior and Decentralization (MIDEC) in its role of coordinating and providing institutional leadership in migration management and the reform process.
  • Improve the analysis of population mobility as well as the understanding of migration profiles and trends in Mauritania.
  • Strengthen the skills and capacities of authorities responsible for border management and cooperative border governance.
  • Enhance the protection of migrants in accordance with migrants’ rights principles.
  • Engage the Mauritanian diaspora in the socio-economic development of the country.

 

Target groups: National and local authorities working on border and migration management.

Final beneficiaries: Migrant communities, the Mauritanian diaspora, and local communities.
