Over 40 people, including women and children, were killed in a number of attacks in central Mali between 3 and 5 June. There are strong grounds for suspecting the involvement of Mali’s armed forces.

The European Union wishes to express its serious concern and outrage at these events that constitute a clear violation of human rights. The European Union urges the Government of Mali to complete the investigations that have been launched, to create the necessary conditions for establishing the exact circumstances of these attacks so that justice can be done and those responsible for these actions, whoever they may be, do not escape punishment.

The European Union is fully engaged, together with the states in the region, in promoting the stability, development and security of the Sahel. Our commitment is conditional on respect for human rights and international humanitarian law. These are the essential principles of our engagement. Nothing can justify abuses which will only lead to an escalation of the very violations we are seeking to combat.
