Experts gathered at the Asia-Europe Conference 2017

On the 3-4 August, the EU Delegation to Malaysia together with Asia-Europe Institute, University of Malaya, EU Centre in Singapore and Jean Monnet Network working together in co-organising Asia-Europe Conference 2017: Is it time for Europe to play a broader role in Asia?

The conference provides a platform to bring Asia and Europe together on a number of important global issues. It also focuses on some of the trends likely to impact on regional development in both Asia and Europe, and questions whether EU and ASEAN need a new approach to maintain their salience and relevance as regional actors.

The Asia-Europe Conference 2017 brings together an outstanding group of experts in the field of Asia-Europe studies and beyond - instigating new thoughts that may benefit both academic analysis and policy development.

The Conference aims:

  •  to make an informed assessment of the current state of Asia-Europe relations;
  • to examine comparatively ASEAN and European regionalism;
  • to examine current challenges in the two regions e.g. multiculturalism and extremism; and
  • to consider whether - in the current geo-strategic context - there is an opportunity and a need for intensifying and broadening the Asoa-Europe relationship.

This year also marks a number of anniversaries which will be commemoratedd with the conference.

  • ASEAN 50th anniversary;
  • the 60th anniversariy of the Treaty of Rome;
  • the 40th anniversary of EU-ASEAN relations; and
  • the 21st anniversary of ASEM.

Four keynote sessions were delivered by:

  • Dr Marty Raden Natalegawa, former Foreign Minister of Indonesia
  • Dr Surin Pitsuwan, former Foreign Minister of Thailand and former ASEAN Secretary-General
  • Prof Kishore Mahbubani, former senior Singapore diplomat; Dean, and Professor in the Practice of Public Policy, at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore
  • His Excellency Francisco Fontan Pardo, EU Ambassador to ASEAN
