Local EU Statement on Two Executions in Malaysia
The Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia and the EU Member States represented in Malaysia issue the following statement with regards to the recent executions in Malaysia:
" On 24 May 2017, two executions were carried out in Malaysia.
The European Union holds a strong and principled position against the death penalty and is opposed to the use of capital punishment under any circumstances.
The death penalty is cruel and inhumane, and has not been shown in any way to act as a deterrent to crime.
Furthermore, any errors – inevitable in any legal system - are irreversible. We will continue our active pursuit of its abolition worldwide.
The European Union calls on Malaysia to stop all executions and to institute a moratorium on capital punishment pending its stated intention to review the death penalty. "
