The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership between 27 European countries. It plays an important role in international affairs through diplomacy, trade, development aid and working with global organisations. Abroad, the EU is represented through more than 140 diplomatic representations, known also as EU Delegations, which have a similar function to those of an embassy.

The EU Delegation to Malawi's mission is to support Malawi and its population effectively in its development ambitions; notably, eradicating poverty, achieving economic growth, integrating its economy into the world economy and becoming a mature and well-governed democracy, while taking into account the interests of the European Union.

We offer a post of Driver in the Administration Section of the Delegation. Under the authority of the Head of Delegation, the Driver will be attached to the Administration Section of the Delegation. His/her main task is to be part of the drivers’ team responsible for all driving related issues for delegation as well as the Head of Delegation.

This post within the Administration Section of the EU Delegation requires a dynamic and committed individual.

Main Functions and duties:

  • Driving the Head of Delegation, other staff and visiting officials to and from meetings and missions; Work as dispatch rider, responsible for deliveries including mail.
  • Ensuring that vehicles are clean at all times and properly maintained. Carrying out routine and thorough vehicle checks on a daily and weekly basis; and preparing weekly defects reports.
  • Following up on service schedules for vehicles and advising the Administrative Assistant accordingly
  • Filling out mission authorization requests and mission claims according to the stipulated rules
  • Complete-ing the checklist for vehicles before going on mission and test the VHF radio and satellite phone while on mission.
  • Summarising log sheets and fuel reports on a monthly basis;
  • Assisting with manual work for the Delegation premises and residential accommodation (moving of furniture, moving of boxes, files or office equipment)
  • Assisting with escorting and supervising contractors and visitors within the Delegation building.
  • Assisting with the management of the reception area.
  • Assisting other colleagues in the Administration section with different tasks, i.e. photocopying and archiving.

Qualifications:

S/he needs to have the following qualifications:

  • Malawi School Leaving Certificate (MSCE), knowledge of mechanics will be an added advantage. Knowledge of basic IT applications is a must. Applicants should possess a valid driver’s licence of Code EB or C.  A defensive driving certificate would be an advantage.

Experience and knowledge:

Five years working experience preferably with International Organisations or diplomatic missions.  Applicants should have extensive experience in driving long distances and in difficult road conditions.

Abilities and skills:

The candidate must have experience in working in a team as well as working in a multicultural environment.  Excellent ability to build positive working relationships with staff, colleagues.

Personality:

  • Good resilience, showing drive and determination in the pursuit of goals, even when faced with difficulties and when working under pressure.
  • Initiative and good analytical skills
  • Flexibility with regard to supporting the section when need arise with other tasks.

  • Short listed candidates will be invited to a practical driving test followed by interviews.
  • Salary will depend on the number of years of relevant experience.
  • This vacancy is for a permanent contract.
