Statement by the European Union Delegation and the Diplomatic Missions of EU Member States in Libya

The European Union Delegation and the diplomatic missions of EU Member States in Libya wish the Libyan people successful municipal elections in the second cluster of municipalities across the country on 16 August.

We express our concern over the announcement by the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) regarding the suspension of the electoral process in several municipalities, including some of Libya’s biggest, such as Benghazi, Tobruk, Sabha, and Sirte. We also unequivocally condemn the recent attacks on the HNEC offices in Zliten, Zawiya and Ajilat.

We strongly reject any intimidations aimed at hampering the electoral process and all attempts to deprive citizens of their right to choose their local representatives, in contradiction with Libyan law and Security Council resolution 2755 (2024). Stressing our expectation that all key stakeholders and security actors actively support the free and orderly completion of municipal elections across the country, we urge the relevant Libyan authorities nationwide to investigate these violations and ensure that all perpetrators are held fully accountable.

The EU Delegation and the diplomatic missions of EU Member States confirm their steadfast support to the HNEC and all relevant Libyan institutions in their efforts to advance the democratic transition responding to the legitimate aspirations of the Libyan people.
