The police station in Hay Al Andalus is one of Tripoli’s largest police stations, serving more than 300,000 people. Over the past two years, the station has been substantially renovated, refurbished and newly equipped. The infrastructure update of the station went hand in hand with an organizational restructuring and training programmes for police officers. The model police station project aims at strengthening the capacity of Libyan security services, and to integrate good practices in community-oriented, citizen focused policing and police organization management under the jurisdiction of the Libyan government.
The Minister of Interior, Mr. Khaled Mazen, declared: "Our celebration of this edifice is not in the beauty of its design, nor in the quality of its furnishings and assets. Rather, our happiness stems from it being the illuminating spot through which the entire international community has partnered with us to advance security in Libya."
“Rule of law and rebuilding people’s trust in state security institutions will be essential elements in rebuilding Libya, and the Libyan unity government put these aspects high on their agenda. The European Union will certainly be ready to provide strong support to the Libyan government’s security sector reform agenda,” said EU Ambassador José Sabadell.
The EU Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM) to Libya contributed to the set up of the model police station through training and advice on best practices in community policing. The collaboration with Libyan authorities aimed at creating protection mechanisms for citizens and also a safe working environment for police officers.
About the project
