On 5 August, the Acting Head of Mission Benny Jensen met with the recently appointed National Security Adviser (NSA), Qasim Muhammad Jalal Al-Araji. The meeting was held in the Headquarters of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in Baghdad and was conducted in full respect of the Mission’s Covid-related preventive measures. The NSA was accompanied by a high-level delegation from different ONSA’s Directorates.
The meeting was very positive and productive. The Acting Head of Mission provided an overview of the status of the Mission and the new mandate. The NSA warmly thanked the Mission for its advising and emphasised that security sector reform is “vital” for Iraq’s stability and peace. He expressed confidence in the Mission and willingness to strengthen our cooperation further. To that end, it was decided to conclude an “Agreement of Cooperation” between ONSA and EUAM to clearly define objectives, areas and modalities for enhanced and expanded cooperation, comprising a monitoring system to assess progress and address problems in regular meetings at various levels, including a bimonthly meeting between the National Security Adviser and the Head of EUAM.
At the end of this cordial and fruitful meeting, the Acting Head of Mission offered EUAM’s assistance in providing ONSA with Covid-19 medical advice and some targeted personal protection equipment.
