As part of the global campaign for clean, plastic-free oceans #EUBeachCleanUp 2019, the Delegation of the European Union to Mexico organised a clean-up activity of the Madín Dam, just outside Mexico City, on 21 September 2019 on the occasion of the World Cleanup Day and the International Coastal Cleanup Day.

Staff of the EU Delegation was joined by representatives of nine of the embassies of the EU Member States in Mexico as well as the UN Environment (UNEP) office in Mexico, together with family members and local friends, representing more than 20 nationalities. The group of more than 50 persons brought their efforts together in cleaning up the water surface by kayak and also the shore of this important dam which provides the drinking water for the municipalities of Naucalpan, Atizapán y Tlalnepantla in the State of Mexico. The activity, which resulted in the collection of approximately 500 kg of plastics and other type of waste, was organized with the assistance of Ríos Limpios, a local NGO.

The event was an opportunity to get a first-hand experience of the contamination of vital water bodies in Mexico and allowed the participants to understand better the impact of disposing responsibly of single use plastics. Moreover, it added another 'grain of sand' of the EU contribution to assisting Mexico in addressing its environmental challenges.

This activity opens the series of events aimed to celebrate the EU climate diplomacy weeks in Mexico. This year's focus is the role of youth in climate action. In this framework, the EU Delegation is organizing, among others, a workshop on 'Climate for the Future – The Role of the Youth' at the School of Political and Social Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) on 26 September and a seminar entitled 'Green technologies and climate change - Opportunities and challenges for the youth' at the School of Sciences of UNAM on 1 October. In both events, students can interact with representatives of the Mexican government, companies and associations involved in climate action as well as with representatives of the European Union.
