Additional information

"EU4Shirak: Wool for Jobs" project

Brief Description:

Shirak region, and Amasia municipality in particular, is known for its long tradition of sheep breeding and traditional wool crafts, integral part of its inhabitants' cultural heritage. Local sheep wool is long, plentiful and thick with up to 16 natural colours; it is ideally suited for carpet, rugs and fabric making. Yet, sheep are currently bred only for meat.

People in Need (PIN) together with co-applicants Women Development Resource Centre Development Foundation, Shirak Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Amasia Municipality have designed an intervention to revive and modernise the wool value chain and the arts of wool crafts in Shirak region as a motor for job creation and Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) development, thus increasing employment and economic competitiveness in the crafts sector in Shirak region.

Actions in Brief

The proposed action follows a value chain development approach from sheep to customers of woollen products. A wool processing factory will be established in Amasia community with the support of PIN and its partners. The project will support increasing the competitiveness of 14 SMEs working along the wool in Shirak region and create at least 60 sustainable jobs for people in Shirak. The focus is on fostering cooperation between SMEs along the wool value chain through mutually beneficial business relations, and joint information sharing and promotion activities as members of the Association of wool crafts SMEs.

The project will contribute to production of quality yarn, processed industrially and semi-manually;  design and production of woollen products based on local traditional know-how, but adapted to current and future domestic and international market fashion trends. The action will foster women's economic empowerment, providing new skills and jobs to women from rural areas, traditionally more engaged in the crafts sector.
