On May 9, Dr. Nicole Miller, Chargé d'Affaires of Delegation of the European Union to the State of Eritrea, hosted a reception to celebrate Europe Day. Dr. Nicole delivered a speech to the distinguished guests mentioning the importance of the unity of Europe and marking the EU's 61st birthday – the commemoration of the signing of the Treaties of Rome in 1957. Dr. Nicole highlighted the importance of the EU's presence in Eritrea, and, with reference to the EU – Eritrea cooperation, highlighted the two priority priority sectors agreed with the Government of the State of Eritrea for the National Indicative Plan under the 11th European Development Fund, namely energy and governance. The event was well attended by high level Government Ministers, Ambassadors accredited to Eritrea, other members of the Diplomatic Corps, Heads of United Nations Agencies and various EU partners.
Subsequently, the Delegation continued celebrating Europe Day with a sports day event at a high school in Asmara. Representatives of the Ministry of Education Zoba Maekel, and sports officials from 4 sub-zobas in the region and 145 pupils participated to mark the occasion.
