Gender equality is a core priority of French foreign policy. Therefore the French Embassy in Azerbaijan organized this year a competition to reward a young Azerbaijani woman whose commitments and actions in Azerbaijan pave the way to a promising and better future in that field.
The jury, which was composed of three women and two men, decided to award this Prize to Mrs. Maryam MAJIDOVA for her project "Gender Hub Azerbaijan".
As the main co-founder of the “Gender Hub Azerbaijan” project, Mrs. Maryam MAJIDOVA has set up in Azerbaijan a network of hundreds of feminists and experts able to mobilize civil society and to raise the awareness of public authorities and public opinion on gender issues. The aim is to strengthen the position and the rights of women, and in particular to reduce gender-based discrimination and violence.
Maryam MAJIDOVA, former Chairwoman of the National Assembly of Youth Organizations of Azerbaijan, received the First Prize which will enable her to take part in a summer school academic program dedicated to human rights, and in particular to women rights, carried out by the prestigious French political sciences university, “Sciences Po Paris”. This program is due to take place in Paris in July 2021.
More than ten women submitted a project in response to the “call for applications” for this competition. The five best applicants were short-listed and auditioned by the jury. Each of these candidates received the official competition’s statuette and a diploma.
The ceremony took place with the participation of the winner and the four additional short-listed candidates, the members of the Jury, and the ambassadors of Germany, Mexico and the UN. The UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Mr. Ghulam IZACZAI, and the Ambassador of Mexico, Mr. Juan-Rodrigo LABARDINI, participated as Mexico and the UN will be co-organising the “The Generation Equality Forum” which will be held in Paris in June 2021. In addition, Mr. Wolfgang MANIG, Ambassador of Germany, attended this ceremony as French and German Embassies plan to organize next year a joint “Gender Equality Competition in Azerbaijan”.
