Bring your archives to life with virtual/augmented reality, spatial audio, and interactive installations via Futures_Past, an initiative of the Embassy of France to South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi, the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), and Electric South. Collaborate with creators, gain global exposure. The deadline for applications is 12 August 2025.

Futures_Past invites archival and cultural institutions across South Africa, Lesotho, and Malawi to participate by nominating a collection or body of material to be brought to life through immersive storytelling.

Are you an archival or cultural institution in Lesotho, South Africa, or Malawi looking to bring your collections to life in new and exciting ways? The Embassy of France, the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), and Electric South invite you to be part of Futures_Past, a new initiative transforming heritage engagement through immersive technologies.

This two-year project (July 2025 โ€“ March 2027) supports institutions in reanimating archives using virtual reality, augmented reality, spatial audio, and interactive installations. Selected institutions will be paired with leading immersive creators to develop six original digital works.

Why participate?
  • Innovate: Digitally activate your collections and explore cutting-edge storytelling.
  • Engage: Reach new, diverse audiences with immersive experiences.
  • Connect: Gain visibility and build capacity in digital heritage.
  • Global Exposure: Participate in a tailored mobility program to France, fostering international collaboration.

They welcome applications from museums, archives, cultural centers, libraries, and universities with cultural, historical, or community-based collections. No prior immersive media experience is required and full support will be provided.

The deadline for submissions is 12 August 2025.
