Ambassador Christina Lassen met today with Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri. They exchanged views on the political, economic and security situation in Lebanon. Ambassador Lassen expressed hope that the consultation efforts by the Prime Minister-designate would soon resolve in a line-up of a new Cabinet. "The European Union believes that Lebanon's stability is essential to achieve economic growth. The swift formation of a government is fundamental to ensure functioning State institutions", she said. Ambassador Lassen also expressed hope that the new government would be inclusive, balanced and of national unity and that women will also be well-represented in the government.

In the meeting, Ambassador Lassen underlined the need to launch concrete follow-up efforts to the CEDRE Conference in line with the many reforms proposed by the government in April. "We look forward to working with the new government to ensure the implementation of important economic and structural reforms that can deliver concrete and significant improvements in the daily lives of the Lebanese citizens", she said. Implementing reforms along with the Capital Investment Plan for Lebanon is a prerequisite for increased investments and economic growth.

Ambassador Lassen discussed with the Prime Minister-designate the important efforts by Lebanon to develop long-term plans for strengthening the security, stability and sovereignty of the country. She urged for a continued commitment to the policy of dissociation to shield Lebanon from regional conflicts, and hoped that a Lebanese-led dialogue on a new National Defense Strategy could be initiated once a new government is formed.
