EU Ambassador Christina Lassen met today with Minister of Interior and Municipalities HE Nouhad Al Machnouq. Discussions focused on the political and security situation in the country, in particular the progress in reaching a new electoral law.
Ambassador Lassen stated that the EU and its Member States encourage Lebanese political parties to reach agreement on a new electoral law. "There is still time for the political leaders to come together and reach consensus on a new electoral law to govern the upcoming parliamentary elections," she said. The EU Ambassador added that conducting parliamentary elections according to the Constitution is an important step to ensure the normal functioning of the Lebanese democratic institutions, in the interest and for the benefit of the Lebanese people. She also said that a democratically elected Parliament is important for the international community supporting Lebanon in its strive for stabilisation and economic development.
The EU Ambassador said that the EU is ready to provide support for the preparation and the organisation of the elections, including by deploying an Election Observation Mission.
