EU-funded programme organises session during Beirut Design Week on furniture sector in Lebanon

On the occasion of the “Beirut Design Week” held in Beirut, the European-Union funded Private Sector Development (PSD) Programme implemented by Expertise France, organised a discussion session on 22 May on the "Design and the traditional furniture sector in Lebanon: History of a challenge for integrating cultural heritage, innovation and economic performance".

Presentations were made by Mr Julien Schmitt and Mr Bassem Hanna from Expertise France and Ms Sarah Ghanimeh from Markits Consulting.

Representatives from the Central Bank of Lebanon, Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Economy and Trade, Association of Lebanese Industrialists, Kafalat, the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Tripoli and North Lebanon, the Business Incubation Association in Tripoli, Academie Libanaise ds Beaux-Arts (ALBA) , Audi Bank, Banque Libano-francaise and Banque libanaise pour le commerce, as well as designers, architects and CEOs of furniture galleries explored the outcomes of the market study conducted by Markits under the PSD Programme on the furniture sector in Lebanon.

The study highlighted the evolution of the national demand regarding furniture styles, the vision of the designers and architects on the traditional Lebanese furniture, the main challenges to reconnect designers and traditional furniture producers, and the actions to develop within the PSD Programme to face these challenges.

The Private Sector Development (PSD) Programme is a three year- project ending in September 2019, funded by the European Union and implemented in Lebanon by Expertise France. The overall objective of the programme is to contribute to Lebanon's economic development and job creation by enhancing the productivity and competitiveness of its private sector more particularly micro and small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) active in the agribusiness (Beqaa and Akkar) and wood processing (Tripoli) sectors through integrated non-financial and financial intermediation services.
