Ambassador Christina Lassen, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon, met today with H.E. Minister of State for Human Rights Affairs Ayman Choucair. Discussions focused on the establishment on the new Ministry of State for Human Rights Affairs and the EU-Lebanon cooperation in this area.

Ambassador Lassen referred to the human rights challenges in Lebanon, but underlined that the establishment of the new Ministry as well as the adoption of the law establishing a National Human Rights Institution and a National Preventive Mechanism were positive steps towards the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. She encouraged constant endeavours to effectively promote and protect human rights in Lebanon, expressing the EU's readiness to continue supporting Lebanon through EU-funded initiatives. 

The EU Ambassador highlighted that the EU is the biggest supporter to Lebanon in the field of human rights. Throughout 2016, a total of 14 EU-funded projects were implemented to tackle pressing human rights issues relating to detention conditions, fight against torture and all forms of ill-treatment, access to legal aid and a fair trial, countering violent extremist and the right to vote, amongst others.
