Ambassador Christina Lassen, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon, met today General Joseph Aoun, Commander in Chief of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF).
Discussions focused on the security situation in the country and on EU support to the LAF. Ambassador Lassen congratulated General Aoun on his appointment and commended the efforts undertaken by the LAF to maintaining stability under difficult security circumstances.
Ambassador Lassen said: "The European Union commends and supports the important role that the Lebanese Armed Forces fulfil to guarantee Lebanon's security and stability, particularly in the fight against terrorism. The EU stands alongside the army and we are committed to continuing providing it with long-term support, addressing different areas, such as integrated border management, capacity building and mine action."
Since 2012, the EU has provided €64 million to the security sector in Lebanon, including to the LAF. The support has targeted the Integrated Border Management Programme, mine action and security sector reform.
