The European Union and its Member States closely follow the on-going discussions between political parties in Lebanon to agree on a law governing the next parliamentary elections, and take note of the decision of President Aoun to adjourn Parliament sessions for one month. We encourage political parties to make the best use possible of this period in order to reach consensus on a new law.
Conducting timely, peaceful and transparent parliamentary elections is an important step to ensure the normal functioning of the Lebanese democratic institutions, in the interest and for the benefit of the Lebanese people. A democratically elected Parliament is an important element for the international community supporting Lebanon in its strive for stabilisation and economic development.
As a long-standing partner and friend of Lebanon, the European Union reaffirms its commitment to provide support for the preparation and the implementation of timely parliamentary elections in Lebanon.
