The 4th European Film Festival officially launched in Laos

The 4th European Film Festival officially launched in Vientiane, marking the start of a five-day celebration of European cinema and culture. The grand opening ceremony, hosted by the French Institute on Lanexang Avenue, brought together representatives from the Government of Lao PDR, diplomatic missions, and Lao citizens, including many young people and students.
Organised by the European Union Delegation to Lao PDR in close partnership with the Department of Cinema at the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism, the festival presents a selection of films from across Europe. Its goal is to strengthen cultural ties and promote deeper mutual understanding between Europe and the Lao PDR.
This festival is an opportunity to enjoy cinema from European countries, some of them Member States of the European Union, others not, united by a common cultural heritage.
On this occasion, we present films from the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. These films reflect the connected histories, values, and lived experience of different European societies, showing the richness and diversity of life across our continent.
Audiences will enjoy a varied programme of fiction films, documentaries, and animated features, offering something for viewers of all ages.
All films are screened in their original languages, accompanied by Lao and English subtitles. Screenings are open to the public and free of charge.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, H.E. Mr Mark Gallagher, EU Ambassador to Laos, said “This festival is more than a celebration of cinema. It is a window into Europe, a platform for sharing good stories, and a bridge between people and nations.”
The festival runs from 14 to 18 May, with daily screenings at the French Institute in Vientiane. We invite you to a journey through cinema, a journey that entertains, increases mutual understanding, and deepens the friendship between Europe and the Lao PDR.
