Joint visit of EU Special Representatives for Central Asia and Human Rights to the Kyrgyz Republic

The European Union’s Special Representative for Central Asia, Ambassador Terhi Hakala, and the European Union’s Special Representative (EUSR) for Human Rights Eamon Gilmore will visit the Kyrgyz Republic on 7-8 October.

It is the second visit of EUSR Hakala and first visit for EUSR Gilmore to the Kyrgyz Republic in their current capacity. The new Head of Central Asia Division at the European External Action Service Dietmar Krissler will accompany both EUSRs.  

During the two-day visit, Terhi Hakala and Eamon Gilmore will hold meetings with senior Kyrgyzstan’s leadership, including President Sadyr Japarov, Deputy Prime Minister Jyldyz Bakashova, Foreign Minister Ruslan Kazakbayev, Chairman of the State Committee for National Security Kamchybek Tashiyev, as well as Ombudsman Tokon Mamytov.

The sides plan to discuss EU-Kyrgyz Republic bilateral cooperation, as well as developments in the Kyrgyz Republic, including upcoming parliamentary elections and situation with human rights and fundamental freedoms. The sides will also discuss EU - Central Asia regional cooperation. Both EUSRs will arrive on 7 October from Almaty, where they participate in the EU – Central Asia Civil Society Forum. The event brought together civil society representatives from the region and EU to discuss opportunities for strengthened civil society engagement in the development of the region and in bilateral EU- Central Asia cooperation.

In Bishkek, apart from bilateral meetings, EUSRs Hakala and Gilmore will meet with representatives of civil society and selected human rights defenders. They will also meet representatives of diplomatic community, including the heads of the EU Member States’ Embassies.
