Human Rights Award 2019
On Tuesday 10 December, at the premises of the EU Delegation to Uruguay, the winning organization of the European Union Human Rights Award 2019 was announced.
The event was attended by the Director of the Secretariat for Human Rights, Nelson Villarreal, the President of the National Human Rights and Ombudsman Institution, Mariana Blengio, and the UN Resident Coordinator in Uruguay, Mireia Villar, among other authorities linked to the field of human rights, as well as representatives of multiple NGOs working on the issue.
The main objective of this initiative is to underline the commitment of the European Union and its Member States to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the full respect of human rights for all.
To that end, the EU Delegation and the Embassies of the EU Member States in Uruguay annually recognize a Uruguayan civil society organization that shows commitment to the issue through its specific activities and achievements, by granting it the EU Human Rights Award. The Award recognizes activities and projects carried out by an NGO focused on effectively disseminating, promoting, defending and protecting human rights, in the spirit of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Award itself consists of € 5,000 to be used in activities linked to the support of human rights.

On this occasion, the Award was granted to the Jasmine Foundation, an organization that promotes the inclusion of children and people with disabilities in society, working especially on equal opportunities.
In addition, the jury decided to grant a Special Mention to Radio Vilardevoz, a community radio that from an innovative experience works on mental health problems.
The Jury was conposed of two representatives from the EU Delegation, a representative from the German Embassy, a representative from the French Embassy and a representative from the United Nations.
The event was used to make visible other EU initiatives in the field of human rights in Uruguay.
