EU helps ensure that the intellectual property rights are better protected in Kosovo

Following three and a half years of the EU’s active engagement with several Kosovo ministries, Kosovo legislation is now better aligned with the latest EU acquis on the intellectual property rights protection.

The EU’s project worth EUR 1.9 million that worked to help build a progressive intellectual property rights protection system has led to the adoption of a new legislation on patents, industrial design, trademarks, trade secrets, and topographies of semi-conductors, while the legislation on the copy and related rights was drafted, and is expected to soon reach the Assembly for adoption.

All of this is taking Kosovo forward in the implementation of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement by guaranteeing the protection of intellectual, industrial, and commercial property rights, just like in the EU; a progress that was highlighted in European Commission’s Kosovo 2022 Report.

“While speaking at the event Alessandro Bianciardi, Deputy Head of Cooperation Section at the European Union Office in Kosovo congratulated the Kosovo institutions for their progress for better aligned the Kosovo legislation with the latest EU acquis on the intellectual property rights protection “The intellectual property rights are important rights in and for the European Union. They are valued like every other right for EU citizens. We are happy that together with you we transcended their importance here in Kosovo as well.  The value of intellectual property rights protection system is not only economical, where the industry contributes in almost every cell of the economy, but also it rewards creative work and solutions that make our life better,” said Bianciardi.

In addition to helping reform the legislation, the EU-funded project also worked with government bodies on drafting subsidiary acts necessary for the effective implementation of the new laws, as well as with the judiciary and law enforcement agencies raising awareness about the best practices in the enforcement of the laws.

The EU’s Intellectual Property Rights project, which concluded today, also worked to raise public awareness about the benefits of respecting those right for business and public at large, producing various publications, guidelines, and educational videos which area available at the following website.
