We are:

The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership between 28 European countries. It plays a major role on the international scene, whether through diplomacy, trade, development assistance or cooperation with international organizations. Abroad, it is represented by more than 140 diplomatic representations, also known as EU Delegations, which have a function similar to that of an Embassy. Since 2007, the European Union has been represented in Switzerland and to the Principality of Liechtenstein by an Ambassador and a Diplomatic mission in Bern. This presence on the ground allows the EU to maintain and deepen its relations with these two countries. The EU Delegation accompanies and supports the implementation of the Treaties between the EU and the two host countries as well as the ongoing negotiations. It also serves as an interlocutor for the media and public opinion. In its mission, the EU Delegation works in close coordination with the Embassies of Member states.

 

We propose:

A post of Policy Assistant. The person recruited will be assigned duties based on the needs of the Delegation. When recruited, the successful candidate will contribute to the implementation of the EU relations towards Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein.

 

The Delegation's offices are currently situated in Bundesgasse 18, 3011 Bern. Locally hired staff work 37.5 hours per week with the possibility of using flexitime and enjoying employee benefits.

 

JOB CONTENT 

Under the supervision of the Head of the Political, Press and Information Section, the Policy Assistant will notably perform the following duties:

  • contribution towards the definition, promotion and implementation of EU policies in several sectors of cooperation with Switzerland and Liechtenstein notably free movement of persons, Schengen and Dublin, cross border cooperation; cohesion policy);
  • monitoring of political activity (meetings of the government, parliamentary sessions, popular initiatives, legislative agenda…), including in its economic and social dimensions;
  • political analysis and reporting;
  • supporting negotiations and follow-up action on EU-Switzerland agreements;
  • input to speeches and public relations;
  • contact point for inter-parliamentary cooperation.

In addition, the Policy Assistant will be an interface with the Trade Section and may be asked to provide support to the work of the Trade Section on certain files.

 

EDUCATION

  • University degree (minimum Bachelor Degree) in the fields of political science, international relations, economy and/or law. A Master Degree would be an asset. Cross-disciplinary training would also be an asset.

 

EXPERIENCE

  • Previous experience in a diplomatic mission or international organization would be an asset. Relevant work experience would be an additional asset.

 

KNOWLEDGE

  • Strong background in political science, international relations, economy and/or law, with a capacity to address sensitive issues from a cross-disciplinary perspective.
  • Very good knowledge of the Swiss political institutions
  • Good knowledge of EU policies and relations with Switzerland and Liechtenstein
  • Computer literacy (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet)

 

SKILLS

  • Excellent command of German, both written and spoken;
  • Excellent knowledge of English and French;
  • Capacity to work in a multicultural team, showing good interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing;
  • Sense of autonomy, organisation and initiative;
  • Ability to prioritise and carry out tasks, even when working under pressure or within tight deadlines, and to respond quickly to new demands;
  • High degree of loyalty and discretion in dealing with EU-related information.

The procedure :

After the expiry of the date limit, a selection committee will examine all the applications. On the basis of the motivation letter and CV, the committee will draw up a list of candidates considered suitable for the post. The short listed candidates will be invited for interview during which the committee will examine in detail the suitability of each candidate for the position. The first interview may be followed by a second interview for a further reduced number of candidates.

Only candidates short-listed for interview will be contacted individually; however the Delegation will provide updates on the progress in the recruitment process on its website.
