On Thursday 11 January 2018, the European Union Delegation in Afghanistan hosted a discussion under the Serena Dialogue series titled "Voices for Peace in Afghanistan". The discussion was attended involved by the Minister of Hajj and Religious Affairs, the Deputy Chairperson of High Peace Council Dr. Habiba Sarabi, Ambassadors, representatives of private sector, media and civil society, opened by EU Head of Delegation Ambassador Pierre Mayaudon.
In his opening remarks Ambassador Pierre Mayaudon said: "Peace in Afghanistan is everyone´s business and it is matter of urgency. Today's discussion aims at bringing different sectors together to join their voices for peace in Afghanistan. Public debate is key in building the much needed national consensus on Peace."
A wide range of opinions were expressed by the panellists and the audience where notably surfaced the call for a bottom-up approach. The participants highlighted the multifaceted dimension of the peace process and the need to go beyond general formulas and rather act decisively in favour of peace.
This was the first event hosted by the EU Delegation under the "Serena Dialogue" which aims at becoming a platform for exchanges with the widest range of stakeholders, particularly the civil society and other non-sate actors, on matters of critical importance for the post-2001 trajectory of Afghanistan.
