Supporting communities in fighting FGM

The first cohort of 10 Community Based Organisations has received funding from the EU and Finland to fight FGM and other forms of gender based violence in Kisii and Nyamira counties.

Today, the European Union Delegation to Kenya launched its grassroots initiative in Kisii and Nyamira counties, together with the Non Governmental Organisations - Solidaarisuus, Cecome, Manga Heart-  and the Finnish Embassy in Nairobi.

The  first cohort of 10 Community Based Organisations received funding for innovative action against Gender-based violence. We believe that by empowering grassroots organisations, working together and promoting partnerships with local authorities, we can achieve a long-lasting impact to end gender-based violence.

Kisii and Nyamira counties are facing high rates of Female Genital Mutilation, with an increasing number of girls cut in secret by medical practitioners. During the long school holidays, more girls are at risk of the cut. The EU supports civil society and local authorities to engage communities, educate children, inform parents and assist medical practitioners, especially during this time when more girls are likely to get the cut.
