EU Delegation and Member States Development Counsellors visit to Turkana

The European Union Delegation to Kenya and Member States Development Counsellors visited Turkana County from 29- 31 January 2025, to explore the region’s potential and strengthen partnerships with relevant stakeholders. The visit also reflected our Team Europe cooperation, working together to support local communities.

During the visit, the Team Europe Development Counsellors met with the Deputy Governor of Turkana, Dr John Erus, with whom they discussed key priorities for the region and how the European Union and Member States can work together to drive development and improve livelihoods.

The Development counsellors also visited projects that have been realised thanks to the European Union or its Member States financing. These include the Migingo Fish Supplies Plant, an important facility supporting local industry and job creation in Turkana. The company sells Tilapia, Nile Perch and Mackerel and also provides also quality and food safety management trainings to Small and Medium Enterprises,(SMEs) especially those owned by women and youth.  To address business-financing limitations, the company offers trade credit to the SMEs to pay back the supplied fish upon sale. With support from the Kakuma Kalobeyei Challenge Fund ( KKCF), Migingo Fish Supplies Ltd will establish an ice plant in Lodwar town, as well as install cold storage depots and satellite distribution centers in Kakuma and Kalobeyei. KKCF is a joint venture managed by the International Finance Cooperation (IFC) and supported by funds from Germany, Netherlands and the European Union.

The visiting Team Europe group had a lively discussion with locally represented civil society organisations. The prevalent challenges in Turkana are related to climate, the pastoralists access to services and integration of the host and refugee communities. While the recommendations focused on increased funding, a particular plea was to include localised civil societies with a solid presence and understanding of the local communities grievances.

Part of the tour included a visit to the Tools exhibition at the Turkana University. The exhibition highlights ancient tools and traditions that have played a key role in shaping Turkana's identity over the centuries.  They also visited the Turkana Geospatial Information System lab, supported by the European Union through the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations and the Learning Lion's Camp, where youth in Turkana are receiving digital skills training.
