Following military actions last month in Ethiopia, the EU has stepped in to provide support for thousands of people who've taken refuge in northern Kenya. Thanks to the EU's funding, the Kenya Red Cross is delivering desperately-needed shelter, survival items such as mosquito nets and thermal blankets, sanitation and basic healthcare services to the refugees - mostly women and children - in three centres in Moyale.
In the immediate aftermath of military operations in Ethiopia that began on 10 March following an ambush attack on a military truck, over 8000 people fled to Kenya in just three days. By the beginning of this month, the number had passed 10000. As part of its response, the EU has so far contributed €100000 to the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
