Media Advisory : High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell first mission to Iraq

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, will travel to Iraq today, 6 September, and tomorrow, 7 September. This will be his first official visit to the country as High Representative.

Today, High Representative Borrell will meet in Baghdad with Iraqi Minister for Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein. They will both hold a joint press point at 13:40 CET. Audiovisual coverage will be provided by Europe by Satellite (EbS). The High Representative’s remarks will be available in writing on the EEAS website. In the afternoon, Josep Borrell will have bilateral meetings with Iraqi President Barham Salih, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, Speaker of Parliament Mohammed Al Halbousi, as well as with United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert.

Tomorrow, High Representative Borrell will have meetings with organisations from civil society. He will also visit the Iraq Museum together with Head of Antiquities Authority of the Ministry of Culture, Deputy Minister Laith Majeed Hussain. Josep Borrell will then travel to Erbil, where he will have meetings with political leaders of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. He will meet President Nechirvan Barzani and have a joint press point at around 12:30 CET that will be covered by EbS and shared on the EEAS website. High Representative Borrell will also have bilateral meetings with Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and with Former President Masoud Barzani.

The EU strongly supports Iraq’s stability and sovereignty, ahead of the early parliamentary elections in October that the EU will be monitoring.
