EEAS Secretary General Helga Schmid held a video-conference (VTC) on 28 May with the five Deputy Foreign Ministers of Central Asia (Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan) and of Afghanistan.

The VTC provided an opportunity to exchange views on regional dynamics, the repercussions of #COVID19 pandemic and the peace process in Afghanistan.

The EU conveyed a strong message of solidarity with the broader region, to which it has delivered a significant “Team EU” aid package, as it is coping with the severe socio-economic repercussions of Covid-19. It emphasised the importance of maintaining the open flow of essential goods and services within the region, including critical medical supplies and foodstuff while welcoming regional cooperation to minimise the implications of border closure.

The EU stressed its commitment to take cooperation forward with the region, in particular in the promotion of sustainable connectivity, security and the management of water resources, climate change and the environment. Participants in the VTC emphasised their commitment to promote the peace process in Afghanistan and encouraged a humanitarian ceasefire along with the UN Global Call.
