Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan  ̶ Today, within the framework of the European Union (EU) project “Promoting professional housing management in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan” (PROMHOUSE) a conference on “Affordable housing is a factor of sustainable development” took place with the support and active participation of the Atameken National Chamber of Entrepreneurs, PF “Parliamentary Development Fund” and Association of Property Developers of Kazakhstan.

An important policy challenge was at the centre of the discussion  ̶  ensuring sustainable housing! Kazakhstan’s cities are facing shortages of affordable housing, poor quality residential buildings and urban infrastructure, limited access to land for construction, rising prices per square meter, thermo-modernisation of old housing, and unprofessional management of residential real estate.

The conference participants developed a number of recommendations on improving the management and operation of residential property, expanding access to land for housing construction, and the need for energy modernisation of the housing stock, which will be submitted to the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development of Kazakhstan, Housing and Utilities KazCentre JSC, Nur-Sultan City Akimat and the Majilis of the Kazakhstan Parliament.

Johannes Stenbæk Madsen, Head of Cooperation, EU Delegation to Kazakhstan: “The European Union is committed to enhancing cooperation with Kazakhstan in the process of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including on vocational education and affordable housing. We are pleased that the exchange of experiences and best practices within the PROMHOUSE project contributes to the development of new educational programmes and viable solutions in the management of residential and non-residential buildings”.
