The Jordan Breast Cancer Programme Completes Training-of-Trainers under the EU Support for Civil Society Organizations Project
Amman, 8 October - For the third consecutive year, the Jordan Breast Cancer Programme (JBCP) conducted several activities, including the Training-of-Trainers (TOTs) workshops for a group of community-based female activists, volunteers and health workers in Al Tafilah governorate, as part of the European Union (EU) Support for Civil Society Organizations Project.
The six-day TOT workshops aimed at building the participants’ capacities through training on several health topics related to non-communicable diseases control, including cancer through focusing on risk factors, prevention practices, and on raising awareness about breast cancer. The training emphasized the importance of educating women about their health rights, while stressing the importance of their financial and economic independence and their role in influencing decisions – particularly the ones related to their health. The training also included discussions of topics related to leadership and gender.
The training is one of the activities under the EU’s Support for Civil Society Organizations Project, in the Blended Learning and Behaviour Change for Local Development "Training of Trainers". It will be followed by a training in Al Balqa’ governorate, in addition to a series of training workshops entitled (Agents of Change) and aimed at sensitizing the community on the topics raised, then conducting community activities to deliver these health and community messages to the target group in both governorates.
JBCP is a national program led and supported by the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and The King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC). Then program was established in 2007 to coordinate and lead breast cancer early detection and screening national efforts, providing screening services to Jordanian women, and raising public awareness about breast cancer.
The EU has a long tradition of extending support to CSOs, recognizing that not only are their actions important to complement the work carried out by the public and private sectors, but understanding as well their critical role as agents of social change and as a safeguard of democratic systems. Their support and funding in Jordan through the “Blended Learning and Behavior Change for Local Development” project complements the objective above where it will enhance the role of civil society in local development, and enhance women’s participation in economic and local development.
