Jerash, 6 January 2020:
A ceremony convened today to lay down the cornerstone for the Palace of Justice in Jerash under the patronage of H.E. Dr. Bassam Talhouni, Minister of Justice and H.E. Eng. Falah Al -Omoush, Minister of Public Works and Housing, and H.E. Maria Hadjitheodosiou, European Union (EU) Ambassador to Jordan. The project will be funded by the EU under the" Support to the Rule of Law in Jordan "Programme, built over a total area of 13816 sq meters, costing approximately 6,276 million Jordanian dinars.
The construction the Palace of Justice in Jarash comes to further realize a court palaces system that is being executed throughout Jordan. The project comes in line with providing purpose-built facilities for judges, lawyers and administrative staff to accommodate an appropriate work environment and provide high quality services to citizens.
“The new Palace of Justice funded by the EU comes to interpret His Majesty King Abdullah II directions to support the justice sector by enhancing the independence of the judiciary system and improving the efficiency of the services provided to citizens. It is a model of professional, just, transparent and streamlined system that merits due respect and acknowledge its importance,” asserted the Minister of Justice in his opening speech.
In her speech, H.E. Maria Hadjitheodosiou, European Union Ambassador to Jordan, stressed how " Enhancing access to justice and allowing the citizens to receive a more professional and qualified support is one of the main goals of the EUs' action.
This building is also the concrete symbol of our joint efforts to reach out to communities outside of the capital city, and strengthen an integrated national system with equal standards and possibilities across the different governorates." she said. “The EU has continuously supported the Justice sector, and the “Support to the Rule of Law in Jordan” programmeis a further important manifestation of thestrong ties, between the Kingdom and the European Union ” she added.
The European Union funded programme ''Support to the Rule of Law in Jordan'', aims to enhance the effectiveness, transparency, accountability and accessibility of the Rule of Law, in alignment with global democratic and human rights principles. To achieve these objectives; the programme will contribute to strengthening the institutional capacities of the judicial system with a focus on judiciary and law enforcement institutions. The Programme will also contribute to the improvement of criminal investigation skills, inter-agency cooperation and international judicial cooperation, public legal aid services and trial processes, while ensuring citizens’ awareness of their rights. The “Support to the Rule of Law in Jordan” programme is being implemented by a group of international agencies in partnership with the Ministry of Justice (MOJ), Judicial Council (JC), Judicial Institute of Jordan (JIJ) and the Public Security Directorate (PSD).
