EU and Jordan: partners for democratic governance
European Commissioner Johannes Hahn and Jordan's Prime Minister Hani Al-Mulki signed yesterday in Brussels a Financing Agreement for a new EU-funded comprehensive democratic governance programme for Jordan. With a budget of EUR 17,6 million, this action will support Parliament, Elections, the Political Party System and Civil Society.
Through this programme, the EU aims at supporting Jordan in its political reform process towards consolidation of deep democracy and at promoting inclusiveness in policy and decision making processes, with a strong focus on women and youth.
The action will be implemented together with the House of Representatives, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the Ministry of Political and Parliamentary Affairs (MoPPA), Political Parties and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) + citizens involved in democratic governance.
Implementation will begin in April 2017 with funds from the European Commission (EUR 15 million), the Spanish Cooperation Agency - AECID (EUR 2 million) and the project implementer (EUR 0,6 million).
The programme will contribute to the follow up of the recommendations of the EU Election Observation Missions (EU EOMs) deployed in Jordan in 2013 and 2016, building up on previous EU-funded projects in these fields.
