The Council today decided to impose restrictive measures on four Russian individuals responsible for serious human rights violations, including arbitrary arrests and detentions, as well as widespread and systematic repression of freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, and freedom of opinion and expression in Russia.

28/02/2021 – HR/VP Blog – EU leaders have held a timely discussion on the future of EU security and defence. We need commitment at the highest political level to make the EU a stronger security actor in a world of fast-changing threats.

This weekend, the Myanmar military has increased its brutal repression of peaceful protests across the country, leaving many protestors dead or wounded. In shooting against unarmed citizens, the security forces have shown a blatant disregard for international law, and must be held to account. Violence will not give legitimacy to the illegal over-throwing of the democratically-elected Government. The military authorities must immediately stop the use of force against civilians and allow the population to express their right to freedom of expression and assembly.


Senior officials from the EU and Japan convened the third meeting of the EU-Japan Committee on 26 February 2021, which coordinates the implementation of the Strategic Partnership Agreement. The meeting was held online. The EU and Japan reviewed the implementation of the agreement and identified the next steps for further strengthening their relationship. The meeting has helped to prepare the ground for a future bilateral summit meeting in Tokyo when conditions allow.


Around the world, NGOs, civil society and human rights defenders protect and promote human rights, democracy, as well as sustainable and inclusive development every day. They often do this unnoticed, far from the limelight and, at times, at great personal risk.

On World NGO Day, we pay tribute to their engagement, the impact of which should not be underestimated or taken for granted.


The EU reiterates its strong commitment to and continued support for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) at this critical point in time. We are determined to continue working with the international community to preserve the JCPOA and ensure its full implementation.


On the 1st of March we celebrate ASEM Day, which commemorates the 1st ASEM Meeting (ASEM1) held on 1-2 March 1996 in Bangkok, Thailand.
