Head, EU Delegation to Jamaica, Ambassador Malgorzata Wasilewska, and Jamaica's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kamina Johnson Smith toasted the 44 year-old EU-Jamaica partnership in the presence of a large audience that gathered at the EU Residence to observe Europe Day on May 9.
It was a celebration of the success of the European Union and a relationship that Minister Johnson Smith says continues to impact many aspects of Jamaican life.
"Over the past four decades, the EU has remained a solid and reliable development partner that has collaborated with the Government of Jamaica in key areas instrumental to our national economic growth and social development objectives," she said.
Ambassador Malgorzata Wasilewska used the opportunity to emphasize the role of the EU as a key player in global peace.
"The EU is the most successful peace project in the world, a solid example of integration and a strong political and economic force," the ambassador told guests. "We have learned much from our experiences and we remain committed to sharing lessons learned with our partners like Jamaica with whom we share a strong political and economic relationship."
Noting concerns raised about possible implications of the upcoming EU parliamentary elections and the impact on EU/Jamaica relationship, Ambassador Wasilewska said: "I can say with confidence that Europe is here to stay and Jamaica and the Caribbean need not to be concerned because we are not going anywhere".
Guests included representatives from government, the diplomatic corps, civil society, the private sector, and beneficiaries of EU support in Jamaica.
Ahead of the reception, the EU ambassador and heads of mission of EU member states met with Prime Minister Andrew Holness who later tweeted acknowledgement of Europe Day and the EU-Jamaica partnership.
