Project overview   

The aim of the project is to develop a new accountancy curriculum for Lesotho called the LePAP Lesotho Professional Accountancy Programme. The course is designed to meet the needs of both the commercial and public sectors in Lesotho. After completing the programme, which includes a practical experience component, students become qualified chartered accountants. Its syllabus is the first of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa and has attracted attention from other countries in the region.

This professional accountancy course is offered at Botho University and developed by the Lesotho Institute of Accountants with support from the EU.

A secondary aim is to end the country’s dependence on foreign-based accountancy qualifications.

Results

            The programme was successfully completed.

Fact and figures

The first semester of classes began in July 2018.

20 students are currently registered in the third semester of the programme with the first technician accountants expected to graduate in June 2020.

The first chartered accountants of the LePAP (Lesotho Professional Accountancy Programme) are expected to graduate in 2023.
