Innovative Caribbean Youth Head to Europe on Prestigious Erasmus Mundus Scholarship

Four young people from Jamaica, The Bahamas and Belize, countries represented by the EU Delegation in Jamaica have been awarded the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Scholarship to pursue joint master’s degrees come September 2021 across Europe.

The courses will run for at least one year and the awardees will complete two study periods, in a minimum of two European countries, with all expenses paid.

Shantelle Francine Robinson of Jamaica will study Work, Organizational and Personnel Psychology at the Universitat de València, Spain. Gaybrielle Smith from The Bahamas will study Marine Environment 2030 at the University of Bordeaux, France. Keno Ignace, who is also from The Bahamas will study Sustainable and Innovative Resource Management at the University of Ghent, Belgium while Jaime Burgos from Belize, will study Decentralized and Smart Energy Systems at the Université de Lorraine in France.

Ambassador Marianne Van Steen congratulated the scholarship recipients during a recent virtual courtesy call and noted the relevance of their programmes of study to finding solutions to the ongoing and emerging challenges across the Caribbean. Ambassador Van Steen, an Erasmus alumna, encouraged the awardees to use the experience to bolster their identities as global citizens.

The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree (EMJMD) Scholarship journey is designed to foster both academic and cultural enrichment. During the courtesy call, the scholarship recipients expressed how excited and energised they are about the prospects of meeting other young thinkers and doers from across the globe, sharpening their foreign language skills and learning more about themselves along the way.

Among the 2,756 individuals worldwide that have been awarded scholarships in 2021, seven  were from the English-speaking Caribbean.
