High Representative Federica Mogherini today called on Israel and the Palestinians to make renewed efforts to kick start peace negotiations.

At its meeting in Munich on 12 February 2016, the Middle East Quartet reiterated its concern that current trends are imperiling the viability of the two-state solution. Underlining its commitment to supporting a comprehensive, just, and lasting resolution to the Palestinian–Israeli conflict, the Quartet agreed to prepare a report on the situation on the ground.

In times of multiple crises, we tend to focus on the most recent one. But particularly in times like these, we cannot lose sight of the conflict in Israel and Palestine. We need to shake life back into the peace process, and do it as a matter of urgency. Violence is on the rise every single day, with victims of both sides. We risk a new escalation, and the very chance of peace is slipping away. We cannot afford it.

Hallel Yaffa Ariel was brutally murdered in her home in Kiryat Arba this morning in an attack that left at least one other person injured.

Let me thank President Rivlin and share with him the fact that the regional situation and the security situation that Israel is facing is indeed a new one. Threats are increasing, some of these threats are the same that Europe is facing. But this new situation is posing also some new opportunities that were not there before, decades ago.

Commissioner Hahn met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Director General Ministry of Foreign Affairs  Dore Gold, Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories Maj, Gen Yoav Mordechai and co-leaders of the Zionist Union Party Yitzhak Herzog and Tsipi Livni. He also visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial where he laid a wreath.
