On 9 May, we mark Europe Day. The 70th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration offers a chance to reflect on what European integration means and on the EU’s role in the world. I want to use this blog post to do this from a personal angle, to set out why Europe as an idea and political project is worth defending.

Josep Borrell, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union/Vice-President of the European Commission, held a phone call today with the new Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini.

They exchanged views on the current situation in the Middle East and challenges ahead, in particular in light of the coronavirus pandemic. The role of UNRWA as provider of front health care services, especially in Gaza, was underlined.

The voice of journalists is our own voice. When media remain silent, it is like societies themselves are muzzled: unable to hold the political and economic leadership to account or to grant people the right to make fact-based choices in life.

This year, we mark World Press Freedom Day in the midst of a global pandemic. This gives us a special reason to pay tribute to all the journalists and media workers who bring us the news and analyse the world we are in.
